Winter is a beautiful time of year. It can also be a bit difficult on our emotional wellbeing due to the short days with fewer hours of sunlight. Our immune system can also take a hit as we spend more time indoors in closer proximety to others. The fluxuation of temperature can also be taxing. Warm and dry indoors, to cold and wet outdoors. There are some beautiful winter essential oils to support optimal health naturally.
Essential Oils for Winter Gloom
Being couped up inside and the lack of sunlight during winter months can leave us lacking motivation, feeling withdrawn, gloomy, discouraged, bored or just plain sad.
“Emotional health refers to overall psychological and emotional well being” according to Dr. David Hill. When we are emotionally healthy we are in control of our emotions, including our behaviors. When we are emotionally healthy we are better equipped to handle daily challenges, and bunce back from disappointments more readily.
There are many oils that support a positive mood, help promote positive moods and counter negative feelings.
Our gift of smell is really quite powerful. Aromas stir memories, influence our emotions, thoughts, moods and behaviors. Essential oils serve to enhance our emotional health. Citrus essential oils like Wild Orange, Bergamot and Lemon are uplifting so they are a good choice when we are feeling discouraged, gloomy or distressed.
Essential oils distilled from flowers like Ylang Ylang, Lavender or Helichrysum are calming making them a good choice when we may be feeling hurt, worried or fearful.
Peppermint essential oil and others from the mint family are invigorating, making them the perfect essential oils for feelings of apathy, moments when you feel anxious or insecure.
The spice essential oils, like Clove or Cinnamon are warming. Those warming sensations and aromas are really comforting when feeling somber, bored or just down right disinterested.
The essential oils that come from trees are very grounding. When you are feeling sad, ashamed or your are grieving, looking to essential oils like Arborvitae, Melaleuca, Frankincense or Spruce.
Herb and grass essential oils like Vetiver, Lemongrass and Sage may support more positive moods when you are feeling angry, bitter or discontented.
You can use a cool mist diffuser to automize them into the air. Feel free to combine them and create you own beautiful fragrance blends.
Essential Oils for Winter Skin
Some of the best things about winter are the winter activities. Play outside in the snow and then curl up next to the roaring fire with cozy warm drink. Those kinds of extreme temperature changes play havoc on winter skin. Dry, irritated, flaky skin are very common during the winter months.
My favorite moisturizer whether it is for my face, elbows or feet, I turn to Organic Coconut Oil. You can purchase a jar at Trader Joe’s or you can find giant tubs of Organic Coconut Oil at Costco. You can use it just like that or you can make it extra special by adding essential oils. I melt my coconut oil, add my favorite essential oils and put my blend into small jars.
Essential oils for the face that I love are Frankincense and a little bit off Melalueca. Ylang Ylang is great as is Geranium.
Protective Essential Oils
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Don’t wait until you succumb to a cold or the flu. Don’t even go there, support your immune system before so that it can keep you healthy during the long winter months. My favorite for immune support is OnGuard.
