Water, one of life’s essential elements. Without water, life ceases to exist. Our bodies as adults are almost 70 percent water and an infant is about 80 percent water. The human brain is about 75 percent water. It takes only a 1-2 percent loss of our water content for dehydration to begin. By the time you feel thirsty, you have already lost at least 1 percent of your water content. The average person loses about 90 ounces of water a day, even more for an active person.
In order to function properly our body must have water. Water helps maintain fluid balance and promotes the proper functions of digestion, absorption, circulation, nutrient transportation, production of saliva and regulation of body temperature.
Water is one of the first things I talk about with my clients. I can not tell you how many times I have heard people say, “I don’t like the taste”, “If I drink water, I have to pee all the time”. Or “When I drink water I have to get up in the middle of the night”. That might be you and in all honesty in another place in time far, far away, that was me. In fact as I look back, knowing what I know now, I was clearly in a constant state of dehydration and I felt like it.
The health benefits that can be had just by drinking plenty of water are significant. In fact drinking just might save your life. Research suggests that when not enough water is consumed blood viscosity increases which may lead to a higher risk of coronary heart disease. Studies conclude that there is a difference between drinking water and other liquids that include sugars, caffeine and alcohol all of which contribute to greater blood viscosity. (1)
Having gotten the serious stuff out of the way, let’s discuss all of the other health and wellness benefits that can come just from drinking more water.
Having a non functional brain may not end your life while you are sleeping tonight, but if you ask me, having a brain working at sub-par levels is extremely frustrating. I know, again, because I have been there. The brain is composed of primarily fat and water. Composed of billions of brains cells called neurons that drive our thinking, learning and feeling. Neurons conduct electrical impulses. What is an excellent conductor of electricity? Water! In order for these neurons to function properly, they need proper nutrients coming from whole foods and plenty of water.
By the time we feel thirsty, we have already lost somewhere in the realm of 10 percent of your cognitive ability! I don’t now about you, but I don’t have 10 percent to spare.
For optimal brain function, start the day with a big glass of water. Feeling sluggish by early afternoon. Don’t got get yourself what you think is going to wake you up in the Grande coffee, drink another tall glass of water. Caffeine in coffee will just boomerang, because caffeine is a diuretic and will make you lose even more water at an excelerated rate.
Another very important health benefit of drinking water is that it flushes out toxins. We accumulate toxins in our bodies from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the products we use on us and in our homes. Drinking water will help to flush those toxins from our body. I like to add some Grapefruit, Lemon or Lime essential oils to my water. It tastes really nice.
Weight Loss ~ When our detox pathways are overwhelmed with toxins as odd as this might sound, it can be difficult to lose weight. Interesting that our body stores excess toxins in our fat cells. If we are overly toxic as a survival mechanism our body will not let go of those fat cells. Our body’s are so amazing, because releasing the toxic little fat cells could mean our liver and kidneys become overwhelmed due to toxic overload. Drink more water regularly to clear out excessive toxins and your body will safely let go of those little toxic fat cells as your detox pathways can handle it…….A-mazing!
Regularity ~ Drinking more water when combined with more fresh and whole foods will improve on that situation.
Headaches ~ Since the brain is composed mostly of water, keeping it hydrated can reduce headache frequency. I can attest to this one too. I used to have migraines 5-6 days out of every week. I have ZERO now. I don’t even get minor headaches anymore.
Wrinkles ~ Invision for a moment a raisin, so sweet and all wrinkled, kinda cute. Wrinkles might be cute on a raisin, but we aren’t raisins. Think how a raisin gets to looking like that. It starts out a nice round juicy grape. Then it gets all dehydrated to the point it shrivels and develops wrinkles. This is so true of our skin! It should be plump when it is well hydrated. Don’t drink enough water, you are gonna look like a raisin. I don’t want to look like a raisin….do you wanna look like a raisin?
Muscle Cramps ~ Nothing is worse that bolting out of a dead sleep in the middle of the night to run around your bed because your leg has gone into some freaky twisted contortion. Leg cramps increase as we grown older in part because as we grow older. A HIGH quality magnesium glycinate can be helpful, but a big glass of water before going to bed will make all the difference in the world. Then when nature calls in the middle of the night, have yourself another drink. You can either be forced out of bed in writhing pain, or you can just get up and use the toilet. It’s up to you:}
Ok, so now you get why water is so vital for your health and wellness and next time you are out with friends or family and your server asks what would you like to drink, you will say “I’ll Just Have Water Please”.
Let me say just a few more words about the kind of water you drink. Water is free so it is very cost-effective. Having water available to you at all times, that can be more of a challenge. Bottled water makes it very easy to carry water everywhere. Think though for a minute about the plastic bottles. Plastic is a toxin. Those toxins leach into the water inside and then we consume them. These toxins are hormone modifiers and are very unhealthy. Leaving a case of water bottles in the trunk of your car makes it even worse. The heat inside of a car’s trunk accelerates the release of those toxic chemicals. Research seems to suggest that these toxins have been associated with early puberty and breast cancer.
Plus another downside is all the waste. Plastic does not disappear in our landfills. Our oceans are full of floating plastic islands. Consider using a reusable stainless water bottle. Get them for every member of the family. Your initial investment will be greater, but in the long run it will prove much more cost-effective when you consider the cost over time of bottle water and then for the cost of potential health problems down the road.
