How to Use doTERRA Essential Oils

If you are new to essential oils or maybe you’re like me who didn’t really know how to use essential oils even though I had dabbled a bit. My only experience in using essential oils came from what I found at the health-food store. Pretty much every bottle said right on the label, “not for ingestion” or “For external use only”. So I thought that was it, they make things smell nice.  It had to be safer than the chemical fragrances that come in products we find at our major markets.

In late 2012 a friend approached me about doTERRA essential oils as a way to support health and wellness. To say it fell on deaf ears is probably an understatement. I was not in any way, shape or form interested in her “snake oil”.

My friend was persistent knowing my views on wellness and my own health challenges. Over time she convinced me to attend a class with her. I finally agreed, and am so grateful for her persistence.

My life and that of countless family members and friends have been significantly impacted for the better. That means I won’t give up on you. I understand your reluctance, but I know, you will never regret taking a closer look.

This is what I now know about doTERRA essential oils that are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. There are no other oils in the world that have earned this certification. What we need to know about essential oils is that there are…….

No federal guidelines for essential oils

There are no federal guidelines guaranteeing what is in a bottle of essential oils. As consumers we must be diligent in finding oils that have their purity, potency and authenticity guaranteed. When you use CPTG essential oils you are ensured that these oils will provide the powerful natural compounds that should be available in a superior quality essential oil for supporting normal health and wellness.

When you have a CPTG essential oil that has been certified for purity and potency, there are 3 ways that you can use them. The first 2 are common to most of us. Aromatically and topically.

There 2 modes are very powerful, supplying your body with their supportive health promoting benefits. There is a third way to use an essential oil when an essential oil has been certified pure. You can ingest them. Let’s talk about the benefits of each.

Aromatically: A smell can stimulate many physiological effects. Certain oils when diffused into the air can be very stimulating, others are very calming and soothing.

Going beyond the emotional benefits, essential oils when diffused can clear the air of unwanted odors and many airborne threats. It is best to use a cool air mist diffuser or one with very low heat so that the chemical structure of the oil is not compromised.

Topically: The natural composition of doTERRA essential oils makes them highly absorbable. When essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade they are generally safe to apply topically, even on small children. With children, newborns or those with sensitive skin, it is a good idea to use a carrier oil. Some oils may cause skin sensitivity, like Cinnamon, Oregano (very hot), etc. With oils in this category always dilute or simply avoid skin contact. Interesting enough, even the hottest of oils, like Oregano can be applied undiluted to the bottoms of the feet without any discomfort.

When applying essential oils topically there can be immediate localized benefits. When applied to the bottoms of the feet where we have very large pores, the oils will quickly be absorbed into the blood stream and surrounding our cells in minutes.

Essential oils have properties to restore us and promote peace and calm. They are excellent when used in massage or in beauty treatments. Applying them topically can relieve head tension, cool the body, or calm occasional minor skin blemishes.

The ways in which certified pure essential oils can be used topically are limitless.

Internally: Many of doTERRA’s certified pure essential oils are also safe to use as dietary supplements for overall wellness support.

Many doTERRA essential oils even carry a food label. If you would like to take essential oils internally it is recommended that you stick to those that contain the food label, especially if you are new to essential oils.

Add 1-2 drops of Lemon oil to a glass of water for a refreshing treat. A couple of drops of Peppermint added to your favorite brownie recipe makes for a delicious treat. I use Ginger, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme, Basil, Cilantro & many other spice related essential oils when cooking on a nearly daily basis.

There are a few oils that are not to be taken internally like Wintergreen. Do not consume any essential oil that specifically says “Not for internal use” or “For external use only”. Those warnings are there for a reason, heed them.

The use of essential oils in these 3 ways will support your health and wellness goals. Even your children will begin asking for essential oils. They will feel the difference without even understanding why.

CPTG essential oils are non toxic. They are safe, effective and without negative side effects.

Do not use ANY essential oils in the eyes or directly drop into the ear.

If an essential oil ends up somewhere it causes an uncomfortable sensation simply dilute it with a carrier oil. Anything with oil or fat will do. Olive oil, any vegetable oil or even whole milk will do in a pinch.
