Safely Using Essential Oils Internally

You may not realize this, but there are many essential oils that are generally considered safe to use internally when taken in appropriate small doses. Of course use common sense and never consume anything that you do not understand or is not considered a food. Is there a way to safely use essential oils internally?

safe to use essential oils internally

I use doTERRA essential oils because they have decades of combined years of essential oils experience behind them, along with modern research giving them the confidence to recommend the internal use of their CPTG, Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils. Understanding essential oils and how the body views them will help in understanding the safety of using essential oils internally.

Understanding Absorption

Essential oils are very different from synthetic chemical products. Synthetics taken internally can be degraded by stomach acids & digestive enzymes. For those that do survive the gut and are absorbed, they will be filtered by the liver before ever reaching the blood stream. Many products are highly concentrated to ensure that enough compunds makes it through this protective gauntlet in order to be effective. The consequences to ones esophagus, stomach and intestines can be serious irritation.

Essential oils, unlike sysnthetic laden products contain the same active compounds, in the same concentrations as they are found in nature. When taken internally they are more readily absorbed and the small doses are appropriate and are more gentle to a healthy digestive system.

When Using pure certified essential oils, More Is Not Always Better

Because doTERRA essential oils are pure, theey extremely potent, so remember very small amounts will go a very long way. We are reminded “Less, More Often”. Using small amounts at more frequent intervals in leu of one large application is recommended so that the body does not become overwhelmed and the body will be able to maintain its natural balance.

Let’s look at Eucalyptus essential oil. There is quite a bit of concern out there about Eucalyptus because of it’s 1,8 cineole content. Consider the source of your Eucalyptus. I prefer Eucalyptus globulus which can be found in the OnGuard blend that we use often in our home.  E. globulus has been given a rating of GRAS or Generally Regarded As Safe.

What is the concern about 1,8 cineole that is found in many essential oils, not just Eucalyptus. 1,8 cineole is commonly known to have many health benefits and is often found in health products and over the counter products. Even medications believed to be very safe can become a problem in inappropriate high doses. The use of certain doTERRA essential oils taken internally is generally far below the levels believed to be safe. When used appropriately, essential oils are a safe way to receive supportive health and wellness benefits for everyone in the family.

Some substances accumulate over time. This can be true of heavy metals. An example of this is colloidal silver. I have actually seen a woman who’s entire body was blue from an over use and accumulation of colloidal silver in her body. This is a product when used appropriately has provided many supportive health benefits, but when over used the immune system and other organs can be compromised. The molecules that compromise these metals are quite large and they can be trapped in the organs, leading to organ damage, requiring aggressive intervention.

The molecules that make up essential oils are simple and quite small. These are molecules that were meant to exist with living organisms. Being aromatic, they move freely in and out of the body’s cells without accumulating and becoming toxic when useed in appropriate small doses. Similar to foods.

Educate Yourself

There are times when essential oils are best used topically or aromatically. An example would be nasal sprays. A natural way to sooth the sinuses and support the feeling of clear breathing would be to use Lemon and Melaleuca aromatically. These two oils will even keep delicate nasal passages moist and when diluted can even be applied topically.

doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therpeutic Grade essential oils can have a very positive and powerful influence on your health and wellness systemically without all of the side effects.

Traditionally we are confronted with the risk vs benefit question. With CPTG essential oils you have the opportunity to take control of your own health and wellness, making informed decisions. These oils can safely be used aromatically, topically and yes, even internally to support the body’s ability to maintain and enhance your health without all of the side effects found in so many products.

Only a very small amount of essential oils out there are of high enough quality to use internally and even a much smaller number are certified for purity and only one is CPTG. When you purchase a CPTG essential oil that has been certified for it’s purity this should be your personal assurance that this oil is going to be potent and pure, free of all unwanted contaminants like pesticides. doTERRA essential oils have been tested without bias using third party testing.
