When it’s cold outside, daylight hours are fewer, we tend to stay indoors more. Being exposed to the elements and in such close proximity to others indoors, it is important to protect yourself from seasonal threats by supporting your immune system. Throughout history plants have provided very powerful tools for human health. Once known as aromatic today we knnow them as essential oils. Their use as effective wellness agents gained notoriety and eventually the use of essential oils had spread around the globe.
Today we understand what it was that made working with these highly concentrated aromatic essential oils so effective through out history.
While these wellness recipes from of old vary from one degree to another there are often some similarities. One ingredient is vinegar. Today I use raw, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar. It is the only kind of vinegar we use on a regular basis. Raw insures that it contains the healthy bacteria that we should be looking for.
Garlic was seen in many recipes too. When cooking from scratch using organic whole foods, I use a lot of seasonings. Garlic goes into at least half of the meals I prepare.
Then there were the aromatic oils or essential oils. Clove essential oil was seen often in blends. Clove is a very powerful spice and is well known for giving the immune system a boost. Extremely high in antioxidants.
Cinnamon & Oregano essential oils were also used, both very powerful aromatics. Lemon essential oil is very cleansing, Eucalyptus essential is great for normal respiratory system support. Rosemary essential oil fits right into this group of oils as well.
You can make your own essential oil blends, it’s really quite easy or you can purchase some excellent blends already made. You want to start with a brand you trust. I prefer doTERRA, although I do use a few others. You want to look for certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils. This standard insures that these essential oils have been certified for their authenticity, potency and purity by a reputable 3rd party. Adulteration is fairly common in the industry.
Plant species is also very important. Not all Clove essential oils will produce the same effect. Various species will contain differing compounds in greater or lesser amounts. That will make a significant difference in how effective an essential oil is.
It’s also important to note that if you have a truly authentic, pure and potent oil, free of contaminates, you should be able to consume it. If in doubt don’t, always follow label instructions. Personally I am weary of a lemon oil that is not considered safe for consumption. When using essential oils that have been approved for human consumption, you should be able to consume these blends. Most of the oils in this blend are after all herbs we cook with.
What are some more ways to protect yourself from seasonal threats?
Make Your Own Protective Blend
- 20 drops Clove essential oil
- 18 drops Lemon essential oil
- 10 drops Cinnamon Bark essential oil
- 8 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
- 5 drops Rosemary essential oil
Combine all of the oils together and store them in a dark glass bottle like this.
Safety: Several of the essential oils in this blend are called “hot oils” and caution should be used, especially for those with sensitive skin. A good place to apply these kinds of hot oils is believe it or not, right on the soles of the feet. The dermis is very thick there and generally tolerates even the hottest of essential oils, like Oregano without a problem. Many even use Oregano NEAT or undiluted there. If in doubt dilute in a ratio of about 1 drop of your homemade Protective Blend (or other hot oil) to 3 drops of fractionated coconut oil or other quality carrier oil. If using on infants or small children, be sure to put socks on to prevent the chance of transferring to other more sensitive areas.
Diffuse: When seasonal threats are high or someone in the home has already been overcome by one of these obnoxious threats, diffusing OnGuard is a great way to cleanse and purify the air in the home.
Hand Cleanser: Combine Witch Hazel which is very protective already with a few drops of OnGuard essntial oil blend to a small bottle or one with a spray top. Perfect to carry with you when you are out and about or to use at home to protect everyone in the family.
Household Cleaner: Mix vinegar, water and several drops of OnGuard blend in a spray bottle. You can safely apply to kitchen surfaces without concern of toxic residue being left behind. Excellent choice for cleaning the bathroom too. It’s the only cleaning and purifying product I use. Nothing beats it and it smells incredible. Or to simplify, just purchase doTERRA’s OnGuard cleaning concentrate.
Sending Kids to School: Start early protecting your children. School zones are full of threats, both seasonal and environmental. Little hands touching everything then transferring the grime on to toys, desks and playground equipment. Apply OnGuard blend as an immune support every morning before they walk out the door. The OnGuard blend can even be found in tiny beadlets already pre-made.
Spiced Apple Cider: This is honestly one of my favorite ways of supporting a healthy immune system. I use Certified Organic unfiltered apple juice (not cider). You can make a whole batch or by the single cup. Simply warm your apple juice on the stove, don’t use the microwave, it destroys important nutrients. If you are making a single cup, a small drop of OnGuard will be enough, for larger quantities, slowly keep adding drops until you reach your desired taste. It is delicious, tastes like a treat but packs a wallop of healthy benefits.
Your body is a master at caring for itself. Support it by eat a clean, organic healthy diet that is not full of processed foods. There is very little food value in processed foods. Believe me I know it’s easier to open a can or slip a pan of pre-made lasagna into the oven, but in the long wrong it is a costly mistake.
Drink plenty of water and really avoid water that comes in plastic bottles. They are making us sick.
Get plenty of rest. I know you probably think you are doing just fine on 5 or 6 hours, but really you are not. Your body can not function at it’s best with those few hours. An adult should have at least 8 hours of sleep for optimal health and a child should have 8-10 hours of quality sleep.
Fall and winter are beautiful times of the year. No one wants to spend them feeling under the weather. Take care of yourself and enjoy the seasons without dread.
