Realizing many, many years ago the importance of avoiding man-made chemicals in my life has led me to be finally about 95% chemical free! It has taken me time to get here but I am of the mind-set that if you try to do this all at once there is a high possibility of failure. For one thing it is quite a bit more expensive to go organic & if you do not see what you believe to be immediate results you are likely to abandon the whole idea. I am also a believer that “It does not have to be ALL or NOTHING at all”. You can take a more methodical approach, introducing more organics and natural solutions over time that will be more valuable as you see & feel the transformation in yourself. It becomes much easier to spend a little extra once you have felt yourself improve from the steps previously taken. I want to share with you some of my favorite organic makeup & DIY natural personal care products.
I began eating organic foods first. In the beginning my meals were just partially organic, but a meal have organic is better than a meal that is purely processed, chock full of ingredients we can’t even pronounce let alone have a clue what they are. At home we eat nearly 100% organic now. We will still throw all caution to the wind on occasion, eating out, but we do try to seek restaurants that offer more organics on their menu.
More recently my husband and I thought we would see how much of a difference we felt removing gluten from our diet. The results were clear in 2 days. There was a major reduction in overall pain levels & elevation in mood. Switching to Gluten Free was not really as hard as it sounds actually. Eggs & bacon for breakfast, skip the toast. More and more restaurants are offering sandwiches wrapped in lettuce….it is really good.
Then we switched to non GMO after watching the movie Genetic Roulette. If you haven’t seen it, do. It is a real game changer.
We have been juicing throughout the years and just made another step towards incorporating more raw foods into our diet by purchasing a Vitmix!
It was about 2.5 years ago that I was introduced to essential oils. Honestly I could have never dreamed that essential oils would have such a profound effect on our lives. Not only were there very clear medicinal values, but I learned a very valuable lesson from applying these oils to my skin. I now know beyond a shadow of a doubt that what you put on you, goes in you. My first experience with essential oils was when Ylang Ylang was placed on the inside of my wrists for an ailment that had been an issue for me for many years. On this particular day, it was pretty bad, but within 10 minutes or less of the oil application was this frequent annoyance was gone. Even better, it has not been back in over 2 years now. That is what placing a few drops on my skin did to my whole body.
Then I got to thinking our body is our largest organ and is actually full of millions of tiny holes. If the essential oils penetrate & have an effect on my entire body, why wouldn’t everything else I put on my skin? That was a major turning point for me. As much as 60% of our personal care products are absorbed into the skin and into the bloodstream according to Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf, M.D. Personal care products should be used with just as much care as what we choose to eat. We already know that the antiperspirants we use that are full of aluminum & other chemicals can a do cause cancer. I set out to remove all chemicals from my personal care products. It has taken a little time to find all of the products I really like, but I am finally completely happy with my natural & organic makeup & DIY personal care products.
Here is a list of my favorite organic makeup brands and personal care products.
I use the complete line of Salon Essentials for my personal hair care.
My husband has used Head & Shoulders for as long as I can remember for itchy scalp. Now he makes his own shampoo starting with Bonner’s Organic unscented baby bath & shampoo. To an empty bottle he has filled with the Bonner’s he adds, Geranium, Peppermint & Lavender. Start with 10 drops of each, but feel free to adjust up or down until you find the perfect combination for yourself.
My husband also uses the Salon Essentials hair conditioner as his shaving cream. It takes a bit of getting used to, because most of us have come to love the foam in a can, but the conditioner will give you nice shave.
I like to moisture with an organic lotion that I found on-line. I like to add very healing essential oils to it. I have added Lavender which is very soothing to the skin, some Cedarwood and some Helichrysum. I love it, the red, dry cracked look is gone. It is also good for you, no petroleum grease.
For the best facial moisturizer/anti-aging product I have ever used, I again turn to nature. This is hands down the best! I get a small essential oil bottle with a dropper top and fill it with fractionated coconut oil & I add about 20 drops of Frankincense, 10 drops of Geranium, & 10 drops of Lavender. That is it. The coconut oil is not greasy, but will absorb quickly into your skin to moisturize. And the Frankincense, the King of Oils will oxygenate your skin, reduce inflammation, fine lines, age spots and just give your face a healthy natural glow. Let me say once again I love this!
Finding organic makeup that I really like was a bit more difficult. With quite a bit of trial and error I have found some products that I love. Here are my favorite picks:
RMS was developed by someone who worked in the makeup & fashion industry and saw the negative impact of daily exposure to chemicals in beauty care products on the skin. Wanting to create a cosmetic line that was as pure as possible and had a solid foundation for anti-aging and long-term beauty. Their products are non-toxic and actually heal and nourish the skin. “RMS Beauty products are formulated with raw, food grade and organic ingredients in their natural state, allowing their living, healing attributes to penetrate and rejuvenate the skin. In their purest form, enzymes, vitamins, antioxidants and their healing properties remain fully intact, encouraging amazing potential for anti-aging effects.”- RMS Beauty. The use minimal heat in order to keep nutrients and healing properties alive. (This is also the way doTERRA distills their essential oils). All of their products are free of harmful chemicals, synthetic preservatives, synthetic vitamins, and genetically altered ingredients (GMO) etc. RMS looks to support natural beauty and long-term health.

One of my favorite products is their concealer, the Un Cover-up. It is smooth and creamy and blends well. I am fair-skinned and use the #11 for concealing and #00 for minimizing dark shadows.
100% products are truly 100% Pure-there are no synthetic chemicals, chemical preservatives, artificial fragrances, artificial colors, harsh detergents or any other unhealthy toxins. Everything they use is food grade and so requires no testing like their chemical laden counterparts. Not testing means that no animal will ever be harmed either. They never use perfumes or fragrances from synthetic chemicals. Those delicious smells in 100% Pure products are from real fruits, pure essential oils, and pure absolutes. 100% Pure products are based around antioxidants which are crucial to slowing the aging process. Since they do not use synthetic preservatives they use natural herbs with powerful antibacterial properties. (If you have been reading this blog, you will know there is no shortage of essential oils which come from herbs with these antibacterial properties).
For those with sensitive skin, you may find 100% Pure cosmetics just what you are looking for.
This is one of the things I really love about 100% Pure. They use the pigments of various fruits and vegetables to produce the beautiful color palette you will see. It is in these pigments that you will find all of the antioxidants and vitamins for healthy skin. Blackberries for the mascara, pomegranates for lip gloss, cranberries for cheek colors. They smell so yummy, your mouth will water as you apply them.
Since their are no harmful chemicals in their 100% Pure products they are safe for your kids too. They also have a nice line of organic baby products.
Aubry has quite a few USDA Certifed Organic products in their collection. My favorite lip balm ever is Aubry’s Organic Lip. It is silky soft and never feels like you are applying a wax. It’s decadent and comes in 5 yummy flavors. Plus it’s only $2.95 for certified organic!
Bumble & Bee
I was introduced to Bumble & Bee by my daughter-in-law. I am now a regular. I love their deodorant, they real do work. Love the name to Pit Putty which is also USDA Certified Organic.
Caring for your body is a chore for some, a fun adventure others and just pure joy for others. For whatever reason you do it, chose your products wisely. Your body will surely let you know how pleased it is.
