Our society has been accustomed to quick fixes. We aren’t inclined to wait for much and we are quick to reach for the over the counter medications or the prescription from our doctor if it will ease our complaint with little or no effort on our part.
However, consumer beware, medications can rob the body of vitamins. Many common and often used medications are know to deplete the body of critical nutrients and healthy organisms. The perfect example of this that most of us are familiar with is the effects of antibiotics on what should be a healthy gut flora.
There is more being said every day about statin drugs like Lipator or Zocor used to reduce cholesterol. These statin drugs deplete the body of CoQ10. CoQ10 is of utmost importance for proper function of the mitochodria which in layperson’s language these are the little power plants of all cells and CoQ10 is the fuel needed to produce the energy. Without a properly functioning mitochondria we are at risk for weakness, muscle cramps and even heart disease. For those who must take statin drugs or are living with chronic illness, the highly aborable form of CoQ10, Ubiquinol will really make a difference. Recommended doses on the bottle are usely not enough. I personally take several 1000 mgs. a day.
There are literally 100s of drugs that will rob your body of vital nutrients and can even have very dangerous side effects. You can take supplements to try and counter balance, but nothing really beats getting those nutrients from nutrition. Whole foods is where you want to look. Fresh organic vegetables and free range dairy and meats are just packed to nutrients that your body will put to use immediately. However sometimes even at that getting enough of the proper nutrients needs to be supplemented and thankfully we have so many options today. Health food stores abound.
Other medications to be aware are Ibuprofen and aspirin that will rob you of folic acid. Lack of folic acid will leave the door open to elevated homocystein, an increased raise in the potential for cancer, depression and heart disease.
Lasix depletes us of Vitamin B6 which in turn sets us up for nerve pain, cancer, menstrual problems and fatigue.
Many laxatives and reflux medications will deplete you of calcium, increasing muscle cramps and brittle bones.
Blood pressure medications will deplete you of magnesium. Magnesium is important for over 300 bodily functions. If depleted of magnesium you may experience muscle pain, asthma, depression, heart disease, heart arrhythmia and even elevated blood pressure, the reason you were taking the blood pressure medication in the first place.
The truth is that so many of those quick fixes a likely causing additional problems that may require you to need other medications. I found this to be true many years ago personally. I developed a awful case of reflux. It came on rapidly and my immediate thought was food, after all, that is what we are generally told about reflux. After literally years of suffering and very expensive medications I began taking control of my health using nutrition and supplementation when needed. Much to my surprise I found was a couple of the medications I had been taking were no longer needed. Then what happened was my reflux dissipated and then a 4th medication was no longer needed.
