Invest In Your Health

As a Life and Health Coach I hear it all the time. It’s just to expensive to be healthy. Organic food costs to much. A gym membership? I can’t afford to do that. Yet these people are often the same ones dropping hundreds of their hard earned dollars at Starbucks on a monthly basis. You need to look at taking care of yourself as a long term investment. Invest in your health, because have you looked at the cost of health care these days? A heart attack, cancer, a broken hip due to weak bone structure can ruin your financial situation for a very long time.

Here is how we invest in our health.

Quality  Food

I have to say this is really probably at the very top of my list and the one area that probably causes most people to shudder at the cost. But I won’t compromise if I can help it. If I had to choose a gym membership or eating quality, fresh and organic whole foods, I’d chose the foods, hands down. I can get my exercise somewhere else besides the gym.

Food is your fuel and just like a car, if you want high performance, you need to put good fuel in the tank.

Food is supposed to provide your body with nutrients. That is its fuel. Those nutrients are important to the healthy function of your cells. Processed foods are depleted of these nutrients. Literally your cells are starving for the nutrition that can’t be found in that frozen lasagna that came in a box. Lack of quality nutrition is why you feel hungry all of the time.

Goodness, not to mention the chemical additives, flavor enhancers, food stabilizers, colors, even things like plastics that goes into processed foods.

Get Enough Sleep

sleep6Sleep is number 2 on my list. For most of you it’s probably just the opposite. You try to get by with 5, maybe 6 hours of sleep a night. Sleep is when your body repairs itself. There is a cycle. It kind of looks like steps going down and back up, evolving through the night. It takes about 8 hours for an adult to complete this cycle.

If you don’t sleep long enough you will be losing some of the steps and all of the steps are important. That loss will catch up with you eventually as damage continues to compound and eventual illness sets in.

Don’t look at it like a waste of time. Getting enough sleep can improve mood, maintain a healthy immune system, give you more energy, and studies show that people who do not get enough sleep tend to struggle with their weight more often.

Even though we are not conscious while sleeping the body is VERY active, quietly going about the business of making repairs for the next day.

Quality Supplements

It would be nice if we could get all of our nutrition through those whole fresh organic foods. However, very few of us can go out to the garden to pick out our dinner and be able to eat it within the hour. Even when purchasing fruits and vegetables that are organic, the time it takes from field to store could be days. The longer foods are removed from their life source, the more they lose some of the nutrient packed density they once had.Supplements1

We also live in a world where we are constantly being assaulted by pollution, whether it be actual toxins in the air, noise pollution or the type of pollution that is emitted from all of our electronic gadgets. There is the job, the boss, the kids and all of their activities, the bills, etc. Life is fast paced and far from simple. All of these add up to a type of stress and constant stress will deplete your body just as much as a chronic illness will.

That is why I use and recommend high quality supplements in various forms to my clients to help our body function at its optimal best.

Exercise

You need to keep moving and moving from your office chair to your car and on to the kitchen before you move to the couch and then down the hall to bed is not gonna be enough.

You need to get out there and really move. So what if you can’t afford a gym membership. The gym can be kind of boring if you ask me. Go for walks. If your are in the mountains, go for a hike. By the beach, walking along the water to so soothing. Live in the concrete jungle? Walk in the mall or walk to the office if you can.

Ride a bike. Take some fitness classes at your local community center or the like. Those classes are often taught by trainers who teach classes in the Health and Fitness Clubs at a fraction of the cost.

Whatever you do, make time to exercise.

Holistic Minded MD

We have a great doctor. While we usually only go for professional help during emergencies, we do get frequent check-ups and get all the blood work and stuff done. It’s good get it verified through blood work how things are going. You may be doing awesome or you may need to focus some attention on particular areas.

Our doctor, tests for all kinds of cool stuff and the typical routine tests too. What I love about her is that she doesn’t first hand write you a prescription. She hands you a stack of papers with your lab results and then goes through each of these offering natural ways where you may be able to improve the situation. Then she is always able to go to plan B if the need be.

So have a really good holistic minded medical partner. We recently moved and our doctor of over 20 years retired just before that. In a new area I had no idea who to go see so I simply started asking around and our new doctor was recommended by a few people. So if you feel you need a change, don’t be afraid to ask for the opinions of others. Look for a physician who is skilled not only in traditional medicine but holistic health too.

Physical Therapy

We have a physical therapist we have used for decades. I always say she is really good at putting Humpty Dumpty back together again. She came into my life when my children were little. They grew up seeing her and now they take their own children to her. She is amazing.

I can’t tell you how many times that someone in our family was told surgery was in their future. Then almost as a last ditch effort, we would go see her and she would do what she does and wow the discomfort that may have lead to surgery was alleviated.

We also use a chiropractor. Have been seeing this doctor for decades too. Our children were really young when we first met. Now I have grandkids.

I’m REALLY picky about my doctors. Either we work together at solving health issues or we don’t work together at all. No god complexes allowed.

Massage

This may be considered a treat for some. For me not only is it very relaxing by there are important health benefits. That reminds me, I need to go get a massage. A massage is more than just relaxation or loosening up sore muscles. A good massage by someone licensed to do so improves circulation and gets the lymphatic system moving. Both of these will help to move toxins out of your body.

Toxins lead to inflammation and inflammation has been proven to be at the core of nearly every health condition.

Life is to short to spend it not feeling good. Your body is incredible!!! Take care of it and it will serve you well and give you a good, long life.
