Inflammation, the enemy within you may go unnoticed for the most part, until one day you become quite ill. It may seem to come out of nowhere, but the truth of the matter it has likely been quietly brewing for years if not decades. Depression, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancers all seem to have a common denominator, inflammation.
Inflammation is a normal function of the body & is a part of a healthy immune response. It is the perfect orchestration of cells & chemicals that come together to fight infection and heal injured tissue. A recent article in 2015 suggests that Carvacrol a primary component of Oregano & Thyme essential oils may support a normal immune response to stressors that trigger inflammation*. Sometimes when our immune system is under particular stress it can overproduce inflammatory molecules leading to unhealthy systems throughout the body. Carvacrol found in these essential oils may help assist in a normal inflammatory response.
There is however a darker side to inflammation when something triggers the inflammation cascade and it fails to shut off. What can we do in our lifestyle habits to continually support a healthy inflammatory response? What will trigger these fires varies from person to person & genetics will also play a role in this hidden inflammation. Some of the more common inflammation igniters are of course smoking, gum disease, and repeated, prolonged or chronic infections such as Lyme Disease.
Exposure to toxins and chemicals in our food sources can lead to leaky gut which causes a chronic inflammatory condition of the digestive tract. That in turn creates a chain reaction where body wide inflammation becomes a very serious problem and often explains many of the otherwise unexplained aches & pains we experience.
Excessive fat and obesity also makes you prone to chronic inflammation because fat cells put out inflammatory proteins called cytokines.
However it is that the fire of chronic inflammation is fueled, a chronic trickle of those immune cells will be damaging to the body’s healthy tissues, leading to genetic mutations which will lead to chronic disease states.
The really frightening thing is, most people are walking around, having no idea that chronic inflammation is creating havoc inside of them. Chronic inflammation is a silent killer.
Have you ever known someone who appeared to be relatively healthy, then one day they just drop dead from a heart attack or stroke while out on their daily run? Or what about the person who seemed to have everything in life, was in their prime and then they are given a horrible diagnosis of cancer.
We all know someone like that and the older I get, it seems to be happening more and more often. I know far to many small children & young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer in the last couple of years. So what is going on?
What we are seeing is systems that are extremely out of balance. Normally when one would get sick or injure themselves, shortly following a healthy inflammatory response, the body would also begin it’s anti-inflammatory response so that balance is restored. It is imperative to have both systems functioning normally.
Sometimes however, the little fire starters become far to great for our anti-inflammatory response to manage. Reducing these agitators is crucial to regaining balance. Stress is a great inflammation igniter and just reducing the stress in your life can go a very long way toward calming the fires of inflammation. Losing weight, reducing your toxic load, eating a healthy diet and avoiding processed foods will all help to reduce chronic inflammation. Inflammation must be addressed at the root.
Chronic inflammation may lead in addition to the above mentioned, allergies, anemia, asthma, autism, autoimmune disorders of all kinds, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Celiac, Chron’s, congestive heart failure, fibromyalgia, gall bladder disease, gerd, thyroid disease, neuropathy, pancreatitis, psoriasis, stroke and complications after surgeries.
The constant headaches, achy joints, feelings of fatigue, upset stomach, itchy skin……these are warning signs. Do not ignore them. Be grateful that your body is telling you ahead of time that it needs your attention. Don’t wait until you have a heart attack or are given a cancer diagnosis. Care for your body, you only get one.
