Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar


Vinegar has been a household staple for centuries. Today you will find vinegar in every home. It can be used for cleaning as well as cooking.

Vinegar has a robust history as an ancient folk remedy for all sorts of health issues. Today many of its touted health benefits are supported by science. Some of the these are, lowering blood sugar, weight loss and diabetes.

Health benefits of apple cider vinegar

In the health conscious community apple cider vinegar is the most popular type of vinegar made of fermented pressed apple juice. It is important that organic apples are used, that it is unheated, unfiltered, and not pasteurized in order to keep maintain the benefits of the “mother”.

The mother can clearly be seen sitting on the bottom of a bottle of apple cider vinegar as cloudy strings. It is important that you should give your bottle a good shake before each use. The mother is full of minerals, pectin and beneficial enzymes.

The process of making apple cider vinegar is similar to that of making alcohol. Bacteria are added once the alcohols have appeared which converts the alcohol into acetic acid, the primary active compound in apple cider vinegar.

Acetic acid is a potent antibacterial which has made ACV useful for cleaning and as a disinfecting agent. It has been known to treat lice, nail fungus, warts and even ear infections.

Vinegar has been used as a food preservative and it has even been proven to inhibit certain bacteria like E. coli in foods.

Malic acid is also formed in the fermentation process giving apple cider vinegar powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.

There are not many vitamins and minerals in apple cider vinegar, but a quality vinegar will contain some very important amino acids and antioxidants.

acv1Apple cider vinegar may aid in digestion. Take a TBLS in a glass of water about 15 mins before a meal. The ACV will stimulate the digestive juices helping to break down foods properly so nutrients can be absorbed.

There are some studies suggesting the apple cider vinegar inhibits cancer. Note that these studies were done on cancer cells that had been isolated outside of the body. How that equates to its effects on cancer in the body has not been proven. But hey, there are so many other benefits to using apple cider vinegar, why not?

The pectin found in ACV is known to be very soothing to the entire digestive tract. It is helpful in reducing gas, bloating and stomach cramping.

It is believed that apple cider vinegar will improve the gut flora, helping to maintain a healthy balance of candida. Over growth of candida is common in most cultures because of the large amounts of sugar found in most modern diets.

When your gut is healthy, your immune system will function will improve. 70% of the immune system happens in the gut so just by improving the gut health you will strengthen your immune system.

ACV is believed to be beneficial to the lymphatic system cleansing the lymph nodes and breaking down mucus.

Apple cider vinegar is a well known cleansing agent, therefore it is a common ingredient in most detoxification products and programs. It is believed to be very cleansing to the liver. A single TBLS a day is a recommended daily effective dose. You can put it in water or if you are like me, you can take it straight (I love it) and then drink your water.

Apple cider vinegar is known for its ability help balance our pH. So many benefits to that. But the skin is one organ that really appreciates a balanced pH. ACV is great for acne, both internally and for use as a skin tonic.

Like lemon which is also very acidic, ACV is very beneficial in balancing out our internal acidity. Elevated acidity of the human body leads to many health conditions. Apple cider vinegar like lemon will help bring us into a more balanced alkaline/acid state.

Unfortunately there are not acv5 (2)many studies done on the health benefits of apple cider vinegar, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. Being that is considered safe throughout history and there are no know real side effects with normal consumption, you might want to give it a try.

For those who are health conscious and like to keep things as natural as possible, organic, unfiltered ACV with the mother is a staple in. It is not a cure all, but nothing really is. It is however another tool in the tool box with many known health benefits and some are even proven.
