It is that time of year when seasonal and environmental threats may cause discomfort. The discomfort associated with these environmental threats may leave you feeling uneasy. Here are some essential oils that work to minimize those feelings that are associated with these types of threats, maintaining feelings of clear airways and easy breathing. Here are my favorite essential oils for sinus & respiratory health
As always, I look for natural solutions to promote health and wellness. Look for products that don’t contain any unwanted chemical compounds and most over the counter products are loaded with them. Toxins are a serious problem for our health and I avoid them every chance I get.
First of all, it is a good idea to keep your immune system strong all year long. Drink lots of water, eat an organic diet starting with fresh, whole foods, stay active and get plenty of sleep.
When seasonal threats are at their highest or I am about to board an airplane I reach for my first line of defense, the immune support blend. It gives that added boost to the immune system and has a beautiful aroma coming from Wild Orange, Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus and Rosemary. It even comes in a convenient lozenge.
Simply the dry air of winter will cause discomfort to the delicate sinus passages. A very dry environment brought on by a heater in your home may be the culprit. That’s why many use a humidifier in their home during the cold winter months. A neti pot will help to keep the sinus passages moisturized which help relieve sinus discomforts associated with dry air.
If you do experience seasonal or environmental discomforts, apply a respiratory blend oil topically to the area of the sinuses, under the nose and across the chest to promote feelings of clear breathing. You might want to mix this blend with a bit of coconut oil and take extra care to avoid the eyes. On small children you may want to apply just to the chest to avoid transfer to the eyes.
You can diffuse the respiratory blend in your home or bedroom at night. Also you could put a drop of this blend into your palm and inhale deeply through your nose. Feel free to use every 2-4 hours as needed.
Lavender, Melaleuca, Rosemary in a quality carrier oil applied topically to the sinus area is very comforting. You can diffuse this combination of oils also, minus the coconut oil. For extra support these oils also work well in a Neti pot with warm water & a pinch of sea salt. Rinse your sinuses several times a day.
Another combination you can try is Melaleuca, Rosemary and Frankincense applied topically to the area of the sinuses, again avoiding the eyes. Frankincense is very soothing and well known for its support of healthy cellular function. Putting these essential oils into a Neti is really nice too.
For convenience we have our vapor rub that can be applied to the chest, the back, the bottoms of the feet or even right under the nose. The blend of Cardomom, Peppermint, Lemon, Melissa, Thyme and Eucalyptus give it a pleasant aroma that is calming to the senses making it perfect for night time application allowing for a restful sleep.
If you would like to have your respiratory support with you whenever you leave home, these little nasal inhalers are small and can be carried in your purse or pocket and used anywhere and at anytime. You can purchase them in multi packs and they cost just a few dollars each. You just put your favorite blend of essential oils on the little wick that is inside.
If you like moisturizing your sinuses you might even want to make a little bottle of your own saline solution with some of these essential oils added.
